5th Workshop on Speech in Noise: Intelligibility and Quality
10/11 January 2013, Vitoria, Spain

LasLab
Vitoria
Spain

Speech is usually perceived in the presence of other sounds, in general addressed as noise. Numerous researchers aim to understand and improve speech perception in noisy listening conditions, for example by processing of the audio signals; a better understanding of human auditory processing or by investigating the relation between speech production and perception. Consequently "Speech in Noise" has become a multidisciplinary research topic addressed amongst others by linguists, acousticians, engineers, physicists, psychologists, neurologists and audiologists. These people meet yearly at the Speech in Noise Workshop to discuss their most recent research findings. The next workshop in this series will take place in Vitoria, Spain on the 10th and 11th of January 2013. This issue will extend the series' tradition of presenting top-level research in a highly informal atmosphere for a low registration fee.

Talks Programme

This year's keynote lecture will be presented by Sophie Scott (University College London, London, UK)

The following speakers have confirmed their contributions:

  • Dorothea Wendt (Carl von Ossietzky Universität, Oldenburg, DE), "Eye-movements as a measure of processing speed during sentence recognition"
  • Jean-Luc Schwartz (GIPSA-lab,Grenoble, FR), "Audio-visuo-motor binding in speech perception"
  • Sira Gonzalez (Imperial College, London, UK), "Binary Masks:goals and means"
  • Sebastian Möller (Technische Universität Berlin, Berlin, DE), "Dimension-based estimation of speech quality: Parametric and signal-based estimation of noisiness, continuity, coloration and loudness"
  • Etienne Gaudrain (UMCG, Groningen, NL), "Concurrent speech perception: from streaming to phonemic restoration"
  • Esther Janse (Radboud University, Nijmegen, NL), "Working memory modulates the immediate use of context for recognising words in sentences: evidence from clear and noisy conditions."
  • Christian Füllgrabe (Institute of Hearing Research, Nottingham, UK), "Speech perception across the adult lifespan with clinically normal hearing"
  • Mauro Nicolao (University of Sheffield, Sheffield, UK), "Actively managing phonetic contrast along an h&h continuum in automatic speech synthesis".
  • Yannis Stylianou (University of Crete, Heraklion, GR), "Speech in Noise Intelligibility Improvement based on Spectral Shaping and Dynamic Range Compression"
  • Cassia Valentini-Botinhao (University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK), "Intelligibility enhancement of synthetic speech in noise"
  • Jon Barker (University of Sheffield, Sheffield, UK), "Evaluating computational hearing in multisource environments"
  • Vincent Aubanel from (Laslab, Vitoria, ES) "Temporal strategies in speech production in the presence of competing speech"
  • Marion David (Université de Lyon, Lyon, FR) "Sequential streaming due to colouration of sound sources"

Poster Programme

All participants are invited to present their research in poster sessions. To propose a contribution to these sessions, please send a short abstract of your presentation to Rolph Houben (a.c.houben@amc.uva.nl) with "SPIN2013" in the subject field. Abstracts need to be submitted before the 15th December 2012. They will be published in a programme booklet, which will be distributed during the workshop and become available on this webpage. The best poster, as selected by all workshop attendants, will be named the winner of the Colin Cherry Award 2013.

The maximum poster size is 150cm by 90cm. Landscape format is preferred.

Registration

There are a limited number of places available at the workshop. As in previous years, the registration fee is £36 (about €45), and must be paid in advance by credit card using our online booking system.

Vitoria

Vitoria is a beautiful Basque town in the northern Spain with about 240,000 inhabitants, and is currently European Green Capital 2012. Founded in the 12th century, the capital city of the province of Álava counts numerous architectural highlights, mostly of religious origin. Undiscovered by mainstream tourists, Vitoria provides numerous good quality restaurants and hotels at highly attractive prices. A Vitoria survival guide will become available, helping attendants to discover the many unrevealed secrets of the city hosting the 5th Workshop on Speech in Noise.
